New patient intakes and admissions are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 AM at our clinic at 4255 Chamblee Tucker Rd, Doraville, GA 30340. Before your intake appointment, we ask that you call us at 770-493-1922 for a brief phone evaluation — approximately ten minutes — so we can determine whether outpatient methadone treatment is clinically appropriate for your situation. If appropriate, you will be scheduled for your intake appointment, meet with our physician, complete your paperwork, and receive your first dose of medication on that same day.
GPA Treatment accepts adults aged 18 and older with a verifiable opioid use disorder. Patients aged 21 and over must have a verifiable addiction to opioids or narcotics for at least one year. Patients under age 21 must have a verifiable addiction for at least two years. Preferential admission is given to pregnant women, recently released incarcerated persons, and individuals who have previously been treated by GPA Treatment, in accordance with SAMHSA guidelines.
Yes. If you are currently enrolled at another methadone clinic and wish to transfer your care to GPA Treatment, call us at 770-493-1922 to schedule your transfer appointment. You may sign a release of records at your current clinic or at our clinic, and we will contact your current program to obtain your dose and phase information. Your current dose and take-home schedule will be honored. If your current dose was not adequately managing your symptoms, our physician may adjust it on the day of your admission.
Please bring a valid government-issued photo ID, your insurance card, a list of all current medications, and any relevant medical records or prior treatment documentation if available. If you are transferring from another methadone program, bringing your paperwork is not required on your first visit. Plan to spend approximately two to three hours at our clinic on intake day.
Methadone is an FDA-approved, long-acting opioid agonist used to treat opioid use disorder. When taken as prescribed under medical supervision, methadone works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain — reducing withdrawal symptoms and cravings without producing the euphoria associated with illicit opioid use. This physiological stabilization provides the foundation patients need to engage in counseling, rebuild daily functioning, and work toward long-term recovery. Methadone has been used to treat opioid use disorder for more than five decades and is one of the most extensively researched treatments available.
Medication doses are individualized to each patient. Your physician will conduct a thorough medical evaluation at admission to determine your starting dose based on your clinical history, current level of physical dependence, and reported opioid use. Your dose will be adjusted over time based on your treatment response, withdrawal symptoms, and clinical progress. The goal is to reach a therapeutic dose that eliminates withdrawal symptoms and cravings and supports your engagement in recovery without causing sedation or other adverse effects.
The duration of methadone maintenance therapy varies by individual and is determined collaboratively by you and your clinical team. SAMHSA guidelines recommend that treatment duration be based on clinical need rather than arbitrary time limits. Research consistently shows that longer treatment duration is associated with better outcomes. Some patients remain in treatment for several years; others for a shorter period. Your counselor and physician will work with you to develop a long-term plan that prioritizes your safety, stability, and recovery goals.
Yes. Patients may earn take-home medication doses based on program compliance, treatment progress, time in treatment, and federal and state regulatory requirements. Take-home privileges are earned gradually — patients who demonstrate stability, engagement in treatment, and compliance with program requirements become eligible for increasing numbers of take-home doses over time. Your counselor will explain the specific take-home eligibility criteria during your treatment planning sessions. Take-home privileges can also be reduced or suspended if program requirements are not met.

Yes. GPA Treatment accepts Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans for Opioid Treatment Programs. Medicare Part B covers methadone treatment for opioid use disorder when provided through a SAMHSA-certified OTP like GPA Treatment. Coverage includes methadone medication, medical evaluations, individual and group counseling, and toxicology testing as part of the bundled OTP benefit. Out-of-pocket costs vary depending on your specific Medicare plan. Call us and we will verify your benefits before your first visit.
Yes. Georgia Medicaid covers methadone maintenance therapy. Unfortunately GPA Treatment does not accept Medicaid.
No patient at GPA Treatment is turned away solely due to inability to pay. Self-pay and sliding-scale fee options are available based on household income. If you do not currently have insurance, our admissions team can assist you in exploring eligibility for medical insurance which covers the full cost of methadone treatment for most eligible patients. Call us at 770-493-1922 to discuss your financial situation confidentially and we will work with you to find a payment option that makes treatment accessible.
Yes. Your treatment records are protected under federal confidentiality regulations, specifically 42 CFR Part 2, which provides stronger privacy protections for substance use disorder treatment records than standard HIPAA regulations. GPA Treatment will not disclose your identity as a patient or share any treatment information without your written consent, except in limited circumstances required by law such as a medical emergency or a valid court order. Your privacy is taken seriously and is a fundamental right in your treatment relationship with us.
As a patient at GPA Treatment, you have the right to be treated with dignity and respect at all times, to receive individualized care based on your clinical needs, to participate in the development of your own treatment plan, to ask questions and receive honest answers about your treatment and medication, to file a grievance if you feel your rights have been violated, to confidentiality of your treatment records under 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA, and to be free from discrimination based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or any other protected characteristic. A complete copy of your patient rights will be provided at admission.
If you miss a scheduled dose, contact GPA Treatment as soon as possible by calling 770-493-1922. Depending on how many doses have been missed, federal and state regulations may require a clinical reassessment before your dose is readministered. Missing doses can cause withdrawal symptoms to return and may affect your take-home medication status. Our clinical team will work with you to get back on track as safely and quickly as possible. If you are experiencing a medical emergency related to withdrawal, call 911 immediately.
GPA Treatment uses regular urine toxicology screening as part of the program. If a urine screen returns positive for illicit substances, your counselor and physician will discuss the results with you clinically — not punitively. A positive result may prompt a reassessment of your treatment plan, a change in counseling intensity, or a review of your take-home medication status depending on the substance and circumstances. Our goal is always to support your continued engagement in treatment and progression toward recovery, not to discharge patients for struggling. Honesty with your clinical team about substance use is always encouraged and will be met with a therapeutic response.
